Discover Port Espresso

Tucked along the harbour at 26 Middle St, Brixham TQ5 8ER, United Kingdom, Port Espresso is the kind of place you stumble into for a quick coffee and end up staying for brunch, a second flat white, and a long chat about the morning’s catch. I first walked in on a breezy Saturday after a coastal walk, drawn by the smell of freshly ground beans and warm pastries drifting onto the street. Inside, it felt relaxed but purposeful-baristas moving confidently behind the counter, locals greeting each other by name, and visitors scanning the menu with curiosity.

Coffee is clearly the heart of the operation. The espresso has that rich, caramel-toned crema you’d expect from carefully sourced beans, and the milk is textured with precision. According to the Specialty Coffee Association, ideal espresso extraction happens between 25 and 30 seconds, and judging by the balance of sweetness and acidity in my cup, they’re hitting that mark consistently. I asked one of the baristas about their process, and she explained how they dial in the grinder every morning to account for humidity and temperature changes-a small detail that makes a big difference in flavour. That level of care shows expertise rather than just routine.

The menu goes well beyond coffee. Their breakfast options range from classic full English plates to lighter choices like smashed avocado on sourdough with poached eggs. On my second visit, I tried a smoked salmon bagel paired with a bright, citrusy filter coffee. The salmon was fresh and generous, the capers sharp enough to cut through the cream cheese, and the bagel toasted just right. It’s the sort of dish that sounds simple but depends entirely on quality ingredients and timing. Local sourcing is often mentioned in reviews, and while I didn’t see a full supplier list posted, staff confirmed they work with nearby bakeries and regional producers when possible.

What makes this Brixham café stand out, though, is how it blends into the rhythm of the town. Fishermen pop in early for takeaway cups, families settle at the window tables after visiting the harbour, and remote workers tap away on laptops midweek. It’s casual but never chaotic. Service is friendly without feeling forced. Orders are taken efficiently, and even during busy hours, tables turn over smoothly. In my experience, that balance only happens when a team is well-trained and genuinely enjoys what they do.

Online reviews reflect a similar pattern. Many customers highlight the generous portions, the welcoming atmosphere, and the consistently good coffee. While no place is perfect-occasional comments mention wait times during peak tourist season-the overall feedback leans strongly positive. Given Brixham’s popularity in summer, a short queue is almost inevitable. Still, the staff manage expectations clearly, and in my visits, the wait was reasonable considering the steady flow of customers.

There’s also a thoughtful approach to dietary preferences. Vegetarian options are clearly marked on the menu, and alternative milks like oat and almond are available without fuss. That might seem standard today, but it signals awareness of changing food habits and customer needs. The Food Standards Agency in the UK emphasizes transparency and allergen awareness, and it’s reassuring to see clear communication around ingredients here.

Location plays a huge role in the overall experience. Being right in the heart of Brixham means you’re steps away from the waterfront, making it easy to grab a takeaway coffee before a boat trip or settle in for a leisurely brunch after exploring nearby shops. The interior is cosy, with simple décor-wooden tables, neutral tones, and plenty of natural light. It doesn’t try too hard, and that’s part of its charm.

From a practical standpoint, prices are fair for the quality offered. You’re not just paying for a cup of coffee; you’re paying for careful preparation, fresh produce, and a spot that feels woven into the community. Over multiple visits, I’ve found the standard consistent, which builds trust. Consistency, after all, is what turns a one-time customer into a regular.

If you’re exploring Brixham and looking for strong espresso, a satisfying breakfast, or just a comfortable place to pause, this Middle Street gem delivers with quiet confidence and genuine hospitality.

  • Great coffee (long black). A slightly darker roast which I love without the liquorice notes of lighter roasts that have become generic in the last few years. The place feels cosy, quirky, and lovely inside (hard to define what makes this so, but some places just have it embedded) and super helpful barista who was happy to make sit-in coffee with ten minutes until closing. I’ll be back. Update: came back had the breakfast hash and it was delicious. (See photo). Love this place.

  • Cool quirky cafe in Brixham with great attention to detail. I can’t wait to come back and try their food too. They do vegan milkshakes and hot chocolates with “all the trimmings” which was a real treat!!

  • Stumbled across this gem and was not disappointed. Superb bacon sandwich and excellent pancakes - thrilled with everything, surpassed expectations. 11/10 - can’t wait to come back!

  • Went there twice, first with a friend then with my family for results day and both times the food was quite nice just not great, my mum cut her gum on the crust of the toast (avo toast) but I loved the bread I thought it was great, the chia pudding was a little dry for my preference but everyone takes theirs different! Food takes quite a wait and the staff just mind their own business which isn't a bad thing, is a very cute shop though (and a lot of brownie points for the thought put into the bathroom!) Definitely worth a try :)

  • Enjoyed our coffee and cakes here, a bright spot in Brixham! Good coffee can be hard to come by, so we’re glad we stopped by - I recommend you do too if that’s what you’re after! We sat at the window bar and basked in the winter sun, a bright and welcome respite from the cool weather outside. Inside there were a few tables and the atmosphere was cosy.

  • Fabulous little cafe, friendly staff and relaxing atmosphere. We have popped in twice now when visiting Brixham. They certainly know how to make a proper flat white and the breakfast hash is food porn! We will definitely be making it a regular when visiting Brixham

  • The cakes are one of the best I've had - super moist. They confirmed that all are homemade. I had the lemon and blueberry one. Coffees are true barista quality, unsure what beans are used. Nice big pot of brown sugar. All brought to your table which is not usual at cafes so big kudos for this. Not very spacious inside but I don't mind. Reasonable prices.

  • Best place for brunch & coffee in Brixham! Food was absolutely delicious - I had the biscoff pancakes and my partner had the breakfast hash. Both were amazing, generous portions and really high-quality! Coffee here is so good too - great flavour and quite a big menu. It's quite small inside, so definitely worth arriving early if you'd like breakfast/brunch.
